FIM FRHPhe-01 Helmets — MotoGP-Spec Certification Explained
What FIM tests beyond ECE 22.06, the MotoGP and MotoAmerica orgs that require it, and which brands currently produce FIM-homologated road racing helmets.
What FIM FRHPhe-01 Homologation Means
FIM FRHPhe-01 stands for FIM Racing Homologation Program for Helmets — version 01. It's the helmet standard developed by the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) — the global governing body for international motorcycle racing — and has been mandatory for all FIM-sanctioned road racing since 2019, including MotoGP, World Superbike, World Supersport, and the FIM Endurance World Championship.
In the US, FIM FRHPhe-01 is required for MotoAmerica pro classes (Superbike, Supersport, Stock 1000, Twins Cup, Junior Cup) and is accepted in place of Snell at every major US motorcycle club road-racing org. A successor version, FRHPhe-02, is rolling out for off-road and rally racing — the moto road-racing standard remains FRHPhe-01 as of 2026.
What FIM Tests Beyond ECE 22.06
FRHPhe-01 starts from the ECE 22.06 baseline and adds racing-specific protocols:
- Higher impact velocities. Tests hit at speeds matching pro road-racing impact velocities, which are substantially higher than typical street crash energy.
- Stricter rotational acceleration limits. The peak rotational threshold is tighter than ECE 22.06's, recognizing that high-speed lowsides and highsides generate more angular force.
- Oblique impact testing on multiple anvils. Helmets are struck at angles representative of slide-and-tumble crashes.
- Per-helmet serial numbers. Unlike ECE's per-batch tracking or Snell's per-model approval, every FIM-homologated helmet has a unique serial that ties back to a single test record.
The result: FIM FRHPhe-01 is the most demanding production helmet standard available to consumers. The trade-off is price — FIM helmets typically cost $1,000+ because the manufacturer has to submit each unit (or batch) to FIM testing.
How to Verify a FIM FRHPhe-01 Helmet
Look inside the helmet near the chin bar. You'll find a sewn-in label with "FRHPhe-01" plus a unique FIM number formatted like FRHPhe-01-XXXX. Take that serial to the public FIM Helmets list and search by helmet name and FIM number — if the serial isn't on the list, the homologation isn't real.
FIM also publishes accepted-helmet lists for specific championships (MotoGP, WSBK, FIM EWC). A helmet on the general FRHPhe-01 list isn't automatically accepted at every FIM-sanctioned race; some series require additional brand or model approval. For US club racing and MotoAmerica pro classes, the general FRHPhe-01 list is what matters.
FIM FRHPhe-01 Helmet Brands & Models
The FRHPhe-01 list is short — only top-tier road racing helmets are FIM-homologated. Currently producing FIM-homologated helmets for the US market:
- AGV Pista GP RR — the reference helmet for MotoGP; carbon shell, FIM, ECE 22.06, DOT
- AGV Pista GP R Carbon Anniversario — the demo helmet on the Gara compliance page; same FIM/ECE/DOT cert stack
- Arai Corsair-X RC — Arai's FIM-homologated road racing flagship
- Shoei X-15 (select markings) — Shoei's MotoGP-spec helmet, FIM homologated for select serials
- Stilo ST5 GT — also widely used in karting and rally
- Bell Pro Star FIM — Bell's FIM-spec variant of the Pro Star
- HJC RPHA 1N — HJC's flagship racing helmet, FIM-homologated for select markets
- KYT NZ-Race — Italian-made FIM helmet popular in WSBK paddock
The FIM Helmets list is updated as new homologations are issued. Always verify the specific serial on your helmet against the live list before relying on it for an FIM-sanctioned race.
Which Racing Orgs Require FIM FRHPhe-01?
FIM FRHPhe-01 is required at the highest tier of road racing:
- MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 — FIM-sanctioned, mandatory FRHPhe-01
- World Superbike, World Supersport, Supersport 300 — FIM-sanctioned
- FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) — FIM-sanctioned
- MotoAmerica pro classes (Superbike, Supersport, Stock 1000, Twins Cup, Junior Cup) — FIM FRHPhe-01 required
Most US club road-racing orgs (WERA, ASRA, CMRA, OMRRA, WMRRA, Penguin) accept FIM FRHPhe-01 in place of Snell or ECE — but don't require it. If you're racing club-level, a Snell M2020+ or ECE 22.06 helmet costs roughly half as much and satisfies the rulebook.
FIM FRHPhe-01 vs Snell vs ECE — When Is FIM Worth Buying?
Buy a FIM-homologated helmet if:
- You're racing in MotoAmerica pro classes or any FIM-sanctioned series — it's mandatory.
- You ride pro-level pace at trackdays and want the highest-protection production helmet available.
- You want one helmet that satisfies every cert family at once (FIM helmets typically also carry ECE 22.06 and DOT, sometimes Snell).
If you're at club level or below, the price gap doesn't translate to meaningful additional protection at typical club crash speeds. A current Snell M2025 or ECE 22.06 helmet from Arai, Shoei, AGV, HJC, or Bell will satisfy every rulebook short of MotoAmerica pro and protect you to the limits of current consumer-helmet technology.

MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, World Superbike, World Supersport, FIM Endurance World Championship, and MotoAmerica pro classes (Superbike, Supersport, Stock 1000, Twins Cup, Junior Cup). Most US club orgs accept FIM in place of Snell or ECE but don't require it.
Which helmets are FIM FRHPhe-01 homologated?
Top-tier road racing helmets including the AGV Pista GP RR, AGV Pista GP R Carbon, Arai Corsair-X RC, Shoei X-15 (select markings), Stilo ST5 GT, Bell Pro Star FIM, HJC RPHA 1N, and KYT NZ-Race. Each homologated helmet carries a unique FIM serial verifiable on the public FIM Helmets list.
Where is the FIM label on a helmet?
Inside the helmet near the chin bar. Look for a sewn-in label with 'FRHPhe-01' plus a unique serial like FRHPhe-01-XXXX. Take that serial to the public FIM Helmets list to verify — if it isn't listed, the homologation isn't real.
Is FIM FRHPhe-01 worth the extra cost?
If you're racing MotoAmerica pro or any FIM-sanctioned series, it's mandatory. For club racing or track days, a current Snell M2025 or ECE 22.06 helmet from Arai, Shoei, AGV, HJC, or Bell will satisfy every rulebook short of pro at roughly half the price. FIM helmets typically run $1,000+ because the manufacturer submits each unit to per-helmet testing.
